Writing is integrated throughout our school day. Students in first grade write in a variety of genres including ... narrative (experiential and fictional stories), retellings, personal letters and cards, personal journals, labels, signs, captions, rhymes, and informational writing (factual sentences and non-fiction pieces).
Our first grade team has worked to devise some helpful hints while helping your child write at home. Writing is not an easy task and can be frustrating and cumbersome for some children. First graders come to school with different strengths and it is important that we build off their strengths to help develop fluent writers. First grade students are working to get their thoughts on paper while at the same time use their best guess spelling by stretching and sounding out words and using proper punctuation. That is a lot to think about!

We have also worked to create writing rubrics and checklists for fall, winter and spring.
Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) is our handwriting curriculum. Following this curriculum, students learn letter skills, word skills and sentence skills. Students learn by first imitating through teacher demonstration, copying and then using those skills independently in writing.
