The idea of insects living on a human host is creepy
indeed. Although lice are a communicable condition, they do not spread disease.
Outbreaks of lice are common wherever children congregate-particularly in close
quarters like summer/day camps, or sleepovers. Often a parent cannot trace back
to an exact moment of exposure.
The Health Room EA and the nurse will help you through an exposure incident.
Both are trained in the detection of lice and nits and will help you recognize
them. Please inform the school
office if your child has a confirmed case of lice. Follow the school guidelines
at the links below. The most important tools of the trade with lice are picking
the nits and patience. Repeated chemical treatments are ineffective and can
overexpose your child to pesticides. The internet is full of home
remedies-enough to leave you thoroughly confused and frustrated. Be prepared to check your child's hair twice a day for at
least two weeks. Sometimes parents will give their boys a 'buzzcut' instead of picking the
nits. This is a great way to reduce the stress levels for both you and your son.
