Hello and welcome to First Grade at Newcastle Elementary School!  This year your child will have two teachers.  Mrs. Cakarnis and Mrs. Miyahara will do a job share.  Mrs. Cakarnis will teach Monday through Thursday and Mrs. Miyahara will teach Friday.

My name is Kristin Cakarnis (pronounced Ch-car-nis). I am thrilled to be teaching at such a wonderful school.  Since I spend a majority of time with your child, I would like to share some background information about myself.

I was born and raised in Tacoma, Washington. Upon graduating from Wilson High School, I headed south to Oregon where I attended Oregon State University.  I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education.  I then attended George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon, where I earned my Master of Arts in Teaching Degree. This is my eighth year teaching and I enjoy being at Newcastle Elementary.

My name is Wanda Miyahara and I am so excited to be teaching first grade this year. I am a native of the Pacific Northwest.  I received both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Washington.  My teaching experience spans over twenty years in both California and Washington.  I look forward to a fantastic year working with your child!

At Newcastle, we work in teams.  We work together with our first grade team to create engaging units for students.  We have high expectations for all students both academic and behavioral.  We believe that when students know what is expected of them, they can reach their highest potential.
