Miss Lo’s Friday Newsletter

October 5th, 2007-

Dear Families,

Happy Friday!  I can’t believe October is already here!  It’s been a busy week in first grade and we are slowly getting into the routine of things.  Getting to know your child has been a fun adventure!  They are a creative and energetic bunch of first graders!  We have fun every day in class together because they always make me laugh and keep me on my toes!  Here’s what we worked on this week:

Text Box: Literacy-
Spelling Practice
Weekend News-working on writing at least 3 things we did over the weekend in complete sentences
Writer’s Workshop-writing about important things in our lives
Word families that end with –sh and -th
Friday Letters
Making Words (taking cut-up letters and moving them around to make various words)
Reading Groups-read The Path on the Map
Handwriting-we have started our handwriting program and it may be tedious, but it’s really important for your child learn how to form and make correct letters because many of them use capital letters in their writing
Math-
October Calendar
Learned about thermometers and discussed different kinds of weather and temperature
Did some simple number stories-using quick pictures and number sentences to solve the story problems
Took the unit 1 assessment-these were sent home on Monday
Learned how to use a number grid (this chart starts at -9 and ends at 110)
Learned about how phone numbers work-please help your child memorize their phone number, if they don’t already know it
Learned different combinations to make 10
Started on Math Boxes-math boxes contain problems that help them practice important skills
Started learning about how analog clocks work
Social Studies-
Passport Club-September passport club went well.  Your October maps came home in last week’s homework bags.  The next check day will be on Friday, October 26th.
Projects-
4th grade Buddies-met our buddies and did a Venn Diagram with them about ourselves (similarities and differences) and used the ActivBoard in Ms. Keller’s room to vote on questions
Old Lady Project-read the book, There Was An Old Lady and created our own old ladies
Spider art project with Tracy Haselman (Thanks Tracy)
Pumpkin Project-painted pumpkins and wrote describing sentences for them
Other-

I recently sent home field trip permission forms for the Seattle Aquarium; if you haven’t sent yours back yet, please do so.  We have 5 chaperones and you will be notified if you are one.  We will be going to the Seattle Aquarium on Tuesday, November 27th from 9:20-2:00.  On this day, please make sure your child has a coat, appropriate walking shoes and a disposable sack lunch.  A reminder will come home as we get closer to the actual date.

In your new homework bag for the week, is a letter about Everyday Math On-line Resources.   I hope you get an opportunity to read this letter, so your child can start playing some fun math games on-line!  I introduced it in the computer lab and they had fun trying it out.

Well, that’s it from me this week!  If you ever have any questions or concerns, please don’t ever hesitate to contact me!  We are in this together as a partnership to make first grade the best experience for your child.  I hope you have a fabulous weekend!  I will be just hanging out; hopefully the weather will be nice!  Take care!

 Warmly,
