Each week, one student in our class will be featured as the “special friend” for the week.  Each child will have the opportunity to share about themselves during their week, so that their peers will learn a little more about them.  This activity is designed to increase all students’ self-awareness and self-esteem.  The Friday before your child’s week, a bag will be provided with a poster and instructions.  They can use the bag to put all of their special friend items in for the week.  If possible, I would like your child to follow the sharing schedule for the week they are featured.

 Schedule:

Monday: Poster Day

Students will fill-out the attached, “All About Me” poster.  They will need to answer the questions about themselves and fill-in the boxes with photos or drawings.  Your child may need support completing the poster, however it needs to be your child’s work.  The poster will be displayed on the “Special Friend” bulletin board for the entire week, so your child will want to put forth their best effort.

Tuesday: Favorite Book Sharing Day

Students will choose one of their favorite books (from home or from our class library) to share with the class and fill-out a book questionnaire.  The child may read the book to the class themselves or I can read it for them.  If your child is going to read to the class, please practice reading orally at home.  Have your child fill-out the brief book questionnaire before they share their book with the class and return it in the bag provided.

Thursday: Share Something Special Day

Students will bring in something special to share.  It could be items from a special collection, something they earned or just something very meaningful to them.

Friday: Estimation Day

On Monday, the students will bring in a treat that can be put into our class estimation jar and it will be shared with the class on Friday.  All the students will spend a week estimating the number of pieces that are in the jar.  It is important that if your child knows the exact number of the treats, they keep it a secret from their friends!  On Friday, the items will be counted using a variety of strategies; this is a good way to reinforce counting and estimation strategies.  Please make sure there are enough treats for everyone.  Small treats work well in the estimation jar (stickers, erasers, pencils, small prizes, small pieces of candy, etc.).  If you prefer to provide different items for the estimation jar that you would like returned home, please let me know.
