Newcastle 5th Grade Presents:

"From Borders to Bridges"

From its stirring opening to its powerful concluding song, "From Borders to Bridges" is a gem among intermediate grade musicals.  This 45-minute pop-style musical review features every student in our 5th grade classes.  Through music --- truly the universal language! --- we celebrate positive action and global harmony.  Please join our full grade level cast as we sing, dance, rap and act on Wednesday, April 2nd, at 7:00 p.m.   We would love to share our message with all of you!

Please note that this is a changed date for our musical.  March 27th (our original performance date) is the opening night for Maywood Middle School's production of "The Pirates of Penzance."  We want to support our upper feeder school's efforts, and many of our 5th graders will want to be in the audience applauding their middle school siblings.  Changing our date to the following Wednesday allows this to happen, and gives us a more relaxed afternoon to prepare our stage for a Wednesday performance.  Mark your calendars!!

Please visit www.PhilTulga.com for fantastic,  fun ideas and activities using music, sound, science, and MATH.

What will the 5th grade be doing as their part of the Folk Music/Folk Art Festival on June 6th, 2008?

Throughout the year, the fifth grade will be tackling their usual music curriculum.  It is a spiraling curriculum from 1st through 5th grade, so each year we touch on previous concepts, travel a few steps further, and are introduced to new information in theory, musicianship, history, instruments, dance, and singing.  We will be interspersing folk music specific to Bluegrass with our regular music as the underpinning of our Folk Music studies.

Studies will be heavy on form and rhythm this year, as the 5th grade students will participate in the Bluegrass grant content by writing their own 4 part rhythm accompaniments to existing folk tunes.   Their studies will also include work with traditional folk instruments, such as a Limberjack (we have two!), spoons, ribs, jugs, autoharps and washboards.  Be watching for their folk instrument performance on June 6th!

We will be delving into colonial music and dance as part of the 5th grade curriculum, which ties into the Appalachian roots of Bluegrass and Folk Music well.  We will briefly explore the Scots-Irish immigrant history of colonial times, and we will learn several folk tunes and dances from the period and beyond.

The 5th grade musical will still be presented in late winter this year, so the 5th grade participation in the Bluegrass theme will take a bit of a backseat until late February/early March.   After that, it’s full speed ahead!

Do you play a folk instrument?  Do you know someone who does? Please call Mrs. Wood with your information!
