| Throughout the year, the fifth grade will be
tackling their usual music curriculum. It is a spiraling curriculum
from 1st through 5th grade, so each year we touch on previous concepts,
travel a few steps further, and are introduced to new information in
theory, musicianship, history, instruments, dance, and singing. We will
be interspersing folk music specific to Bluegrass with our regular music
as the underpinning of our Folk Music studies. Studies will be heavy on form and rhythm this
year, as the 5th grade students will participate in the Bluegrass grant
content by writing their own 4 part rhythm accompaniments to existing
folk tunes. Their studies will also include work with traditional folk
instruments, such as a Limberjack (we have two!),
spoons, ribs, jugs, autoharps and washboards.
Be watching for their folk
instrument performance on June 6th!
We will be delving into colonial music and
dance as part of the 5th grade curriculum, which ties into the
Appalachian roots of Bluegrass and Folk Music well. We will briefly
explore the Scots-Irish immigrant history of colonial times, and we will
learn several folk tunes and dances from the period and beyond.
The 5th grade musical will still be presented
in late winter this year, so the 5th grade participation in the
Bluegrass theme will take a bit of a backseat until late February/early
March. After that, it’s full speed ahead!
Do you play a folk instrument? Do you know someone who does?
