Throughout the year,
students will study the regular music curriculum, which emphasizes rhythm and meter awareness, basic notation, dance, form, basic music
styles, limited history, singing, and barred instrument
arrangements. Mrs. Wood will tailor the music used for these
lessons to align with the folk music of the American Folk Arts tradition and our own neighborhood history. During the school year, the 1st graders will explore one and two part compositions on our barred instruments.

| The fun really begins when we prepare our
Folk Tale performance for the June 6th
Folk Music/Folk Art Festival! The following will give you an
overview of the 1st grade preparation and participation. |

What will the 1st Graders be
performing as their part of the Newcastle Folk Arts and Heritage
Festival?
|
|
The First Grade will begin to prepare for the Folk Arts and Heritage
Festival on June 6th by working with renowned storyteller Dr. Margaret
MacDonald. On January 7th, she will present an assembly for the
entire school, then rotate throughout 1st grade classrooms for
targetedworkshops.

In Music class, we will be
working with the concept of an “add-on story” with layered sound effects or
rhythms, which works well with the basic Rondo form that is part of the
regular 1st grade music curriculum. This also works well with the
mathematical concepts present in a quilt (a form of Folk Art), i.e., square,
rectangle, triangle, sequence, pattern, repetition, etc. Sequence and
repetition can also be represented in the pattern of the students’ folk
tale, so the eventual story becomes a melding of literary/musical/math/folk
art concepts. |
