Field
Trip Information:
Our field trip to Alki Beach is on June 5th.
We will depart Newcastle Elementary at 10:15. Those chaperoning need to
be to school no later than 10:00. We will tide pool from 11:00am until
12:45pm. Transportation will be on a district bus. Students will
need to bring a sack lunch, with plenty of water.
The tide is supposed to be a -4
at 12:39pm, so we will be tide pooling during the lowest point. We will
definitely get to see many of the animals, birds and plants that the
students are studying in class. It’s sure to be a fantastic day!
There is a special dress code
for this trip. Regardless of the weather (even if the forecast is
for 80 degrees), parents and students alike must wear long pants with
either tennis shoes or boots because of liability reasons. The
beach can be quite slippery, wet, and dangerous. Please bring
sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and possibly rain gear as we’ll be outside
for a long period of time.
Civics
Unit:
We have begun studying civics.
Students are reading about citizenship and the three branches of our
government. Who is in each branch and what is their job will be
discussed. We are examining United States symbols and the history of
each symbol. As the students read, they will be highlighting main points
and taking notes. Also, they will be filling in charts and learning
chants, as they are introduced to our basic government structure.
Homework:
The only homework students have right now is their Tide Pool
ABC Book, which is DUE
JUNE 13th. Students will be responsible for
bringing their book to school and home each day. This is very important
because we will work on the books at school each day and if it is left
at home students will not have the opportunity to write or draw any
final copies in class that day.
Hopefully we’ll have some
summer weather soon – it’s bound to happen.

Mrs. Baier & Mrs. Joseph
Culminating 3rd Grade Project
Tide Pool ABC Book
Throughout our tide pool unit each child will collect related terms and
ideas for each letter of the alphabet. An “ABC List” can be found
inside your child’s homework folder. Students know that this list
must stay in their “bring back” pocket every day so that it is readily
available, both at home and at school. They will use terms
researched (at home and school) to create a Tide Pool ABC Book.
The local libraries and internet are great researching resources.
Below are the guidelines and expectations for this project. We
will be working on this in class with students bringing it home to work
on twice a week for homework. This project will be their only
homework beginning June 2nd. During this time
students MUST bring the book to school each day so that they can
continue to work on it during our research time.
This should
be a fun and creative way for your child to demonstrate what he or she
has learned about tide pools and the Puget Sound.
ABC BOOK
GUIDELINES:
·
Each
letter of the alphabet must be used in the book. The first
sentence for each letter should begin, “C is for ___________.”
This sentence should be followed by at least 1-2 sentences describing
the term. A thin black marker should be used to go over the
pencil.
Example text:
C is for clam.
Clams are a species of
bivalve mollusks, which means that they have two shells. Clams
burrow into sand or mud by using their hatchet-shaped muscular foot.
They use their siphon to breathe and eat plankton when the tide is in.
·
Each
page should have a picture that matches the term or idea being
described. The artwork must be student drawn and colored.
Please do NOT include any photocopies or computer-generated
pictures.
The due date for this project is Friday, June 13th.
