The SAGE program has been in existence in the Issaquah District since
1978. Approximately 13 percent of the total district population is within
the gifted range, as compared with a nationally expected 3 percent.

Currently SAGE serves well over 600 students in grades 3 through 5 with a
program that is tailored to the needs of both the students and the
individual school program. Although it is now simply called SAGE, initially
the letters stood for Special Approach to Gifted Education.
Students are identified for the SAGE program through district wide
testing at the end of second grade. To be admitted students need to score at
or above the 97th percentile on an abilities measure. Once
admitted they remain in the program throughout their time in the district.
Students are pulled out for SAGE one day a week. Curriculum for the
elementary program changes yearly and focuses on thinking skills, in-depth
projects and goal setting.
